How to create motion design videos with Claude and AI prompts

By Luca Buchmann · · 2 min read

In short

Claude can build motion design videos by writing the animation as code. A precise prompt defines format, scenes, colours and every movement. The animation is then exported frame by frame as an MP4. You need neither After Effects nor coding skills.

For a long time, motion design meant learning After Effects, watching tutorials and investing weeks. AI has changed that. With the right prompt, Claude builds a video that looks sharp, calm and well thought out. This guide shows how to create an AI video with Claude, which kinds of videos it suits and what matters in the prompt.

Two ways to create a video with AI

Video model

Generated videos

a video model paints every frame itself, for example a scene on a beach. It looks cinematic but is hard to control. Text, logos and interfaces often blur, and every run looks different.

Our approach

Animated videos made with code

Claude writes the animation as code, which a tool then records frame by frame. Text stays crisp, colours are exact and every movement lands to the fraction of a second.

For motion design the second way is almost always the better choice. Every video in the DrillUp library was made like this, from app launch films to ads.

This is only the start. Our prompts average around 15,500 words: every scene, every movement, every colour is described precisely. That is why your video really turns out like the example.

  1. Pick a video

You see exactly what you will get.

  2. Copy the prompt

One click. Structure, style and motion are already in there.

  3. Create your own video

Change topic, style and scenes. No experience needed.

  1. Pick a reference. Start with a video you like, so you know exactly where you are heading.
  2. Copy the prompt. A good video prompt describes format, length, scenes, colours, type and every movement.
  3. Make it yours. Paste it into Claude and swap name, topic, copy, colours and scenes.
  4. Check the preview and refine. Say in plain words what should change: slower, bigger type, one scene fewer.
  5. Export as MP4. The animation is turned into a video file frame by frame. See How to export a Claude animation to MP4.

What makes a good video prompt

"Make a cool video for my app" gives you a random result. A strong prompt defines the format (16:9, 9:16 or 1:1), the exact length and number of scenes, a common thread such as one object travelling through every scene, colours, type and light, and every movement with timing and easing. The prompt for "Nimbo" describes a 14-second product film in six scenes at 30 frames per second with a camera that never stands still. Learn the structure in How to write AI video prompts.

Which videos this works best for

Three tips for better results

One idea per scene. Viewers take in exactly one message in two seconds.

Real copy instead of placeholders. Put your actual message into the prompt so Claude plans size and timing around it.

Change, do not copy. Use a prompt as a blueprint. When you change topic, style and scenes, you learn why a video looks good and your result becomes your own.

Do I need any experience?

No. You need no editing software and you do not have to code. If you already work in After Effects, you mainly save time. An honest comparison: After Effects vs AI.

Frequently asked questions

Can Claude make videos?

Yes. Claude does not paint pixels like a video model. It writes the animation as code with shapes, text and motion, which is then recorded frame by frame as an MP4. That gives you crisp motion design with exact colours and precise timing.

Is it free?

You need access to Claude; for short videos a regular plan is often enough. The export tool is free or licensed depending on your choice and company size. The prompts in the DrillUp library come with a plan.

How long does one video take?

With a finished prompt, the first version is usually ready within minutes. Plan about an hour for polish and export the first time, after that it gets much faster.
